CPD explained

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) allows us to maintain and demonstrate our fitness to practice. For many professions this is mandatory, including those registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). The HCPC state:

'Continuing professional development is the way in which registrants continue to learn and develop throughout their careers so they keep their skills and knowledge up-to-date and are able to practise safely and effectively'.

You can see the standards and expectations the HCPC require here

In essence good CPD practice:

  • consists of regular CPD activities
  • comprises a mixture of activities
  • relates to your own professional practice
  • improves your practice
  • benefits your service users
  • is your own work
